A BULB show and exhibition of craftwork and domestic skills at Flookburgh Village Hall in March 1985 was a big success.

The show was the inspiration of Pat Anderson and her committee to raise funds towards the preparations of the flower festival which was to be held at Flookburgh Parish Church later that year in aid of the church’s renovation fund.

There was a wide variety of fine needlework and embroidery in the handicraft classes.

Also on display were mouth-watering examples of cakes, pastries, scones, marmalades and jams. The array of bulbs, hyacinths, tulips, daffodils and floral arrangements provided a colourful scene. The children’s classes showed off the talents of local youngsters.

The crowning of the Flookburgh Charter Queen took place in the grounds at the youth centre in June 1985.

Heavy rain in the morning, which looked like it would continue throughout the day, suddenly stopped just before the parade had been marshalled and it remained fine when the Queen was crowned.

The procession of decorated vehicles, inducing those of the 1985 Queen Helen Grimshaw and the retiring Queen, Christine Oldcorn, and their retinues, started from near the Engine Inn, at Cark, and paraded through Cark and Flookburgh to Bridge House Home for the Elderly before returning past the Square at Flookburgh to the crowning ceremony on the playing field.

The parade was accompanied by the music of Flookburgh Band and included the Kendalian Majorettes.

The Charter Queen was attended by her cousins, Samantha Ellis, ten, and Kerry Ayres, ten, and the flower girl was Emily Cavendish.

The Queen wore a lemon dress which had belonged to her aunt, Miss D. Ashcroft, who had worn it when she was a rose queen in Manchester.

The new Queen read the Charter grated by Richard the Second giving Flookburgh the right to hold a fair annually.

The fair was officially opened by Mr J. Mitchell, head of Flookburgh School.

Entertainment during the afternoon included a display of parachute jumping.
